Yolanda Johnson has dedicated her life to learning and helping others. As a parent, caregiver, advocate, and lifelong learner, her passion for early childhood development is deeply rooted in her lived experiences. “I’m the first in my immediate family to have a college education,” Yolanda shares with pride. Her journey began over 20 years ago when she pursued a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, inspired by a dream to one day open a daycare center. Now, she’s taking additional steps to make that dream a reality by working toward her Child Development Associate (CDA) credential and obtaining her child care license.
Yolanda attributes much of her drive to her late older brother, who passed away 21 years ago. “He was my father figure and the person I looked up to,” she says. “He had an entrepreneur’s mind and always pushed me to stay in school and get an education.” Her passion for caring for others comes naturally, a trait she inherited from her mother, a retired Home Health Aide.
As a single mom of three who also helps raise her nephew, Yolanda balances her roles with grace and determination. Her love of learning fuels her advocacy work. “I work in all aspects of life in hopes of making all children’s and families’ lives better,” she explains, listing areas such as early education, nutrition, home hazards, and mental health. She supports others by serving on boards and committees where she amplifies the voices of those who are often overlooked.
Through her work with the Think Babies Michigan Coalition, Yolanda continues to impact her community by advocating for quality child care and early childhood development. “I learned about all the resources available through Early On, and I often refer others to them,” she says. She encourages families to connect with medical professionals and use networks of caregivers, schools, and doctors to ensure children receive the support they need to thrive.
“I always do what I say I will do,” Yolanda emphasizes. “Sometimes that makes for a crazy calendar, but I take what I do seriously.” Her commitment to learning and helping others has made her a trusted resource for parents in her community. Whether it’s addressing developmental milestones or tackling broader systemic issues, Yolanda’s passion lies at the intersection of advocacy, education, and community support. She remains steadfast in her mission to empower parents, share resources, and promote quality child care, ensuring that no family feels left behind.
