Think Babies Michigan Parent Leader Spotlight – Darika Williams

Darika’s Journey:  Spreading Light Through Advocacy and Enthusiasm

From a young age, Darika demonstrated incredible drive and determination. In high school, she competed in DECA, an organization for students interested in business, marketing, entrepreneurship, and leadership. By 19, she had earned her associate degree, and before her 21st birthday, she was managing a retail store. Darika once aspired to become a lawyer to help families, while also nurturing a passion for beauty and fashion. Through it all, one constant remained: her unwavering commitment to making those around her a little happier.

After the birth of her daughter, Darika experienced a period of adjustment. “I mean, the responsibility is enormous,” she said. “It wasn’t what I expected it to be, like a fairytale.  I was a first-time mom, and my expectations and reality were different.”

Feeling overwhelmed, she worried that her natural inclination to help others was fading. Thankfully, her Doula provided the support she needed and also introduced her to Think Babies Michigan (TBMI), a network advocating for young children and families. “It was a perfect match for my interests,” Darika shared. Through this connection, she rediscovered her passion for spreading light and supporting others.

Now a single mother, business owner, and Doula, Darika’s enthusiasm for helping young children and mothers shines brighter than ever. Inspired by her own mother’s achievements in education and social work, Darika is committed to advocacy work that uplifts families. She works with Milk Like Mine, a breastfeeding coalition and community birthing center, and is an active member of Think Babies Michigan.

Darika’s advocacy goals focus on providing resources for single mothers. “Health, financial, mental… all those resources are so important for a single parent,” she said. “The responsibility and pressure of being a parent is daunting for any family but even more so for a single person.” Drawing from her experiences, she wants to ensure that all parents, regardless of income, have access to the support they need. Darika’s goal is to be a voice for children, mothers, and fathers. “I want people to understand the magic inside of them, and sometimes it just takes somebody to help them see it for themselves,” she explained. Reflecting on her journey, Darika credits her mother as a guiding force. “My mom always made me feel protected, and I want to share that feeling with everyone I can.” Her mother’s ability to balance education, a career, and raising children inspires Darika to show up for others in meaningful ways.

Darika describes her superpower as “being the sun in other people’s lives.” While her path hasn’t always been easy, she’s found strength in her positive outlook and her own resilience. Today, Darika continues to advocate for families, share her light, and empower others to see the magic within themselves. Her story is a testament to the power of determination, support, and a heart dedicated to uplifting others.
